I decided to try something new this semester. Each of my classes are going all in: my students are going to build websites and create multimedia projects. My two intro classes (African Freedom Fighters and Popular Culture and Politics in Africa) have the opportunity to build sites, discuss historical research, and create a podcast series. My upper level class (Identities, Power, and Revolutions in French Africa) will make sites, analyze documents, create two podcasts, and one digital storytelling short. I am not particularly tech savvy, but I wanted to mix it up. I am bored of stale essays full of generalizations. I want students to explore the art of research and create fun and engaging products that show us not only what historians do, but also make it accessible. As I told my students, this may end up being a dumpster fire, but at least we will have fun along the way.
